Filming Hyena Stock Video Footage

Filming hyenas is not hard. The hardest part is going to Africa. National parks and preserves are great places to see hyena and almost all such places conserve the species, at least within their historic range.

Within protected areas hyenas can become quite tolerant. In fact they can quickly become nuisances and beggers when given handouts. In some places, such as Kruger National Park in South Africa, they are quick to use culverts as dens making them relatively easy to get close to.

The hyena may be the ultimate scavenger. With a nose that can smell carrion miles away, jaws that can crunch bones, and a gut that can handle anything, the animal is made for scavenging.

In Africa there are two widely-distributed species, the gregarious spotted hyena and the solitary brown hyena. The latter tends to be less tolerant of people. The former often travels in small groups which helps it chase cheetahs, leopards, and even lions off of a kill.
