Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica
This is an old webpage carried forward to our new site. Please note that some of the information might be out of date and we probably have newer footage.
Corcovado National Park
Corcovado National Park is a hundred-thousand acre park in southwest Costa Rica, on a peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. It may be the crown jewel of the famous Costa Rica park system. It is not an easy park to get to, but well worth the trip.
The park consists of classic Central America rain forest jungle. Being near the equator and ocean there is little temperature change, but there is a distinct wet season and dry season.
The diversity of wildlife is incredible. Although barely a blip in the land area of North and South America the site conserves up to 10% of the biological diversity of the two continents. Perhaps the most photogenic mammal species are the monkeys. The park has all four of the Costa Rica monkey species; the howler, the spider, squirrel, and white-faced capuchin. Other photogenic species include the macaws, toucans, and other colorful bird species, the leaf-cutter ant and other insects, the anteaters and other mammals, and the poison dart frogs and other amphibians and reptiles.
Corcovado National Park Stock Footage
Corcovado National Park is world famous for its biological diversity. There is no end of things to see and film. However, that is not to say that filming wildlife at the park is easy. The rain, high humidity, thick vegetation all work to frustrate the videographer and test equipment. The dry season is much kinder to the videographer, of course you are less likely to see some species during that period, such as the tree frogs, but you will have fewer issues with your equipment. The park is true jungle, with very little sunlight penetrating the thick forest canopy. That, along with the overcast skies, means that you will want a good light-gathering lens and camera.
A guide will definitely help you spot more wildlife and to identify the great diversity of species. There are several excellent ecolodges within walking distance of the park.
